Tomas Macek was born on November 1, 1857 in Jasenna, Czechoslavakia. Church records from that time, though may be incomplete, indicate Tomas was an only child for Tomas and Terezie Macek. He was a farmer and Protestant.
On October 27, 1879, Tomas married Frantiska Bravenec (b. Sept. 25, 1857). The following is a list of children born to Tomas and Frances while still in Czechoslovakia:
Tomas January 24, 1877-February 4, 1877 Pauel July 16, 1880- Tomas May 25, 1882- Jan February 10, 1884-August 7, 1884 Frantisek (Frank) July 16, 1885
On May 23, 1887, the young couple, along with Tomas and Frank, set their sights on joining more than 40,000 other Czechs in search of lush fertile land by boarding a ship in Germany and heading to Galveston, Texas in America. The eldest surviving son, Pauel, stayed in the homeland to care for his grandmother. The family set their feet in America on June 8th, 1887. They then headed to their new "home" in Burleson County.
Shortly after their arrival, Frances gave birth to our first American-born ancestor, a daughter named Frantiska. Over the next several years the couple was blessed with more children:
Frantiska November 1887 Josef, Josef Emil, Anton Died as infants Charles January 24, 1894
Of all the children born to Tomas and Frantiska, only three survived to carry on the family name. Tomas (1882), Pauel, and Charles each married and had several children.to spread the Macek family name.
Upon the untimely and premature death of Frantiska on December 12, 1898, Tomas was left to care for they young children. However, a year after his first wife's death, Tomas met and married Anna Mikulastic Hlavaty. They married on December 5, 1899 in Caldwell, Texas
In addition to their previous children, Tomas and Anna had many children of their own to carry on the family name. However, this group of children, all educated in the United States, had the spelling changed to the pronunciated English version of Matcek.
