Where We Came From
Our line in the Macek family dates back as far as the 1770's in Jasenna, Czechoslovakia in the District of Vizovice. Many of our ancestors were small farmers and, though a minority in Czechoslovakia, they were of Protestant Faith.
Our Name The name 'Macek' mean 'tom-cat' in the Czech language. This is very ironic as throughout the many generations of Macek's, you will find the name Tom, short for Tomas, several times. The actual name has been found recorded dating back to medieval times throughout Europe. It actually has a biblical orgin as a form of the name Matthew.
Is it Macek or Matcek? Both! You see, thought the original name was spelled M-a-c-e-k, it was pronounced as if it had a "t" preceeding the "c". When asked their last name, the teachers, not familiar with Czech spellings, spelled the names as they sounded. Hence, a "t" was added to a branch of the family. Therefore, you will have first cousins with the two different spellings.
The Trip To America
In May of 1887, Tomas Macek, seventh generation, and his wife Frantiska, set their course for the New World. Along with their two youngest children, Tomas and Frantisek, left the Port of Bremen, Germany and sixteen days later landed at the Port of Galveston, Texas. After landing in Galveston, the young couple traveled the state and settled in Burleson County after finding the fertile land they were promised they would find in America. Six months after making their claim, Frantiska gave birth to the our first American born ancestor.
